The Girl Behind the Camera

Hello! My name is Alex Demas and I am a high-school senior. While I have always loved taking photos, I did not start my photography career until last year (2017). My sister had taken a photography class when she was in school and enjoyed it so I decided to do the same. I desperately needed a break from the rest of my demanding classes and while photography was no blow-off course, it did provide me with the creative outlet that I didn't realize I needed.

To me, photography is an amazing practice that allows you to capture the moments in your life that you want to remember. Whether it be an important event that you've been looking forward to or a fleeting instant that leaves you in awe, snapping a photo is the perfect way to commemorate life's beauty and spontaneity.

While photography itself is incredible, my teacher also played a major role in my cultivated passion. Mrs. Wargin is the type of person whose own constant excitement is contagious. When coupled with her limitless knowledge and talent when it comes to photos, you can't help but push yourself to "make" photographs that would, hopefully, make her proud.

Entranced by the endless photographic opportunities I saw around me, I wanted to continue learning and snapping photos even after Photography I ended. The next step seemed logical, Photography II. However, my schedule did not allow it. So, my photographic hero, Mrs. Wargin, swooped in to the rescue and allowed me to complete an independent photography study. While I was nervous about not being in an actual class, I wound up gaining more knowledge from my brainstorm sessions, failed ideas, and one-on-one sessions with Mrs. Wargin than I thought possible. I came out of the study with eight completed projects, all of which you can find under Gallery.

After putting the projects on display at my school, I realized how much I enjoyed sharing my work with others and seeing their reactions. Most of my projects center around the theme that we need to remember to look for the beauty and kindness around us, especially in today's fast-paced and seemingly dark world. I am proud of all of my work and will be overjoyed if you gain even the slightest bit of hope from my photos and writing.
